INTERVIEW WITH NERD

YO WHATS GOOD MAN?

I'm just tryna say blessed dog.

WHERE THE GIRLS AT Nerd LOL ? I ALWAYS SEE YOU WITH DIMES DAWG , I GUESS YOU GOT IT LIKE THAT THEN . . .

Man the girls are everywhere you just have to find a way to get them to want to be around you and I'm barely figuring that out [laughs].

WHO IS Nerd?

That's a good question, Nerd is a nickname that I got in high school from my close home Brandon AKA Belvi. After I had spit on stage at a Westchester High Pep Rally, he came up to me and said "When I see you, I'ma do this (he threw up the Star Trek sign) and I'ma say what up Nerd." I had gotten so frustrated with people calling me "nerd" like it was a bad thing so I just took on the name and made it cool, you like the word Nigga.

WHAT AREA OF L.A ,ARE YOU REPRESENTING ?

I come from many places in this city, but I've lived in Inglewood most of my life so that's where I rep.

WHAT IS THE PERFECT SQUARE MIXTAPE?

[laughs] Okay so this is gonna sound super dorky but I took a Math thoery class freshman year of college and one assignment was to find our "Mystical Number". There was a formula that determined your number and what it meant to you. My number was 4 so I looked at the description and the first word it said was square. Well for one we look at "squares" kinda like nerds so I was just born to be a nerd I guess [laughs]. Not only that but four is the month I was born on, and the square root of 4 is 2 with is the day I was born on, making that a "perfect square".

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO DO A SOLO ALBUM ?

You know man it feels great even though this mixtape is so frustrating. It took a long ass time to come out cause of expenses and working with the wrong people, I didn't want it to come out in the summer because it's not a "summer mixtape", and just as an artist who gives to much of himself on songs to still be "outshined" by rappers who just rap about nothing - man it kills me.

But its like my art, it's my work that represents me and what I love. By this being my introduction to the underground industry I'm excited to see who understands what I'm about and what I'm trying to do.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRACK ? BECAUSE MINES IS "The First Song On the Mixtape" WITH MONSTA CALI LOL.

Ha Ha Ha I'm really in love with Just Mite. Uncle Dave was nice enough to toss me a track and I felt that was the theme song to the mixtape. My mind is shifty and complex and things get to the point where I just walk away from it. My bad ya'll I didn't mean to be so depressing [laughs]

WHY DIDNT "MONSTA CALI "( TERRELL )MAKE THE MIXTAPE DAWG ?, HE GOT BARS FOR DAYS !!
See again that was about of the frustration of the project, I had these songs that I've been writing since '05 and I just wanted to get them out. I got to the point where I didn't feel like waiting on cat's who always give you that "yea just hit me up" or "we gon' collab" line. To me that's got me thinking "okay is he just tryna avoid me on the low cause he think I'm wack? He obviously didn't think so-and-so was wack cause they just did a track last week and asking me to listen to it.

That's why I said fuck it and did everything myself, paying for studio time, promotion's, no feature's (except for the first track). This is all me for now. But Terrell did produce First Track. . . and "Give it Me".

Who and what inspires you to write? Is your focus political, personal or just to entertain? WHAT DO DO YOU BRING TO THE TABLE AS A ARTIST ?

How can you speak to a million people at once? Either write a book, an article, poem, give a speech or . . . write a song. I write songs about me and what I feel needs to be addressed. Mostly it's positive and complex but it's my truth. I speak my truth.

As far as what I bring, its the perspective of a "nerd" someone who doesn't fit in just because they don't fit the paradigm that has been placed on their generation. So i just give a "nerd perspective".

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RAPPING ? BECAUSE I REMEBER YOU BATTLE RAPPING IN HIGHSCHOOL.

Oh man I've been rappin' since 14 months, ha ha ha nah but I'm glad you asked cause I have a song on the mixtape called "It all started. . .". And really I've been spittin since about 2004. Yeah I used to battle rap, them days was fun, that was to get my name out there I don't battle anymore, not to say that I won't if anybody wants beef. [laughs]

WHAT IS HIP-HOP TO YOU?

Hip hop is a sub-culture. It's people having a form to express themselves in any artistic way they want. Hip hop is not rap music.

WHERE DO YOU PERFORM MOSTLY AT SO PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU ?

Most of the time people catch me at Da Poetry Lounge on Fairfax and Melrose, I've also performed at The Spliff a few times. I have a show Wednesday August 6th at the Knitting Factory on Hollywood BLVD that Im getting hyped about.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE GET THIS MIXTAPE ?

Right now you can download it from my myspace music page (www.myspace.com/nerdraps) or my facebook page (Dominic Nerd McDonald). It's also on a few blogs like f2dlife.blogspot.com and thefourthquarter.wordpress.com

Its gonna hit the streets with two new tracks and my two street singles.
